Shawshank Redemption (1994)

People need to know that The Shawshank Redemption is an Oscar-nominated 1994 movie based on a Stephen King story about a man sent to a maximum security prison in Maine in the 1950s who shows the other inmates perseverance and provides a sense of hope and optimism in the bleakest of places and under the most difficult of circumstances. The gritty world of Shawshank Prison is populated with sadistic guards, a corrupt warden, and predatory fellow inmates.

The film also shows inmates forming a loving community of friendship and support despite oppressive conditions and a sense of maintaining perseverance and hope in the darkest of hours.

Tropic thunder (2008)

Tropic Thunder, a comedy that excels in both satirical jokes and laugh out loud stupidity. If you're game for any of that, in addition to quite possibly the funniest and most shocking cameos of all time, then Tropic Thunder is the perfect movie to close the summer with.

With Ben Stiller proving he can easily handle such outsized material (the movie begins with four of the best trailer/ad parodies ever!) and excellent assistance from Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, and a surfer dude delightful Matthew McConaughey (as Stiller's agent), Tropic Thunder is a good time gutbuster.

Goodfellas is a 1990 American crime film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is an adaptation of the 1986 non-fiction book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. The film narrates the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family over a period from 1955 to 1980

In June 2008, the AFI put Goodfellas at #2 on their AFI's 10 Top 10—the best ten films in ten "classic" American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the movie-related community. Goodfellas was regarded as the second-best in the gangster film genre (after The Godfather).

Roman Holiday (1953)

Roman Holiday (1953) is a delightful, captivating fairy-tale romance shot entirely on location in Rome, and produced and directed by one of Hollywood's most skillful, distinguished, professional and eminent directors - William Wyler.

The film's bittersweet story is a charming romantic-comedy, a kind of Cinderella storybook tale in reverse (with an April-October romance). A runaway princess named Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn), during a goodwill tour of Europe, rebels against her sheltered life and royal obligations. She escapes the insulated confines of her royal prison to find a 'Prince Charming' commoner - an American journalist-reporter (Gregory Peck) covering the royal tour in Rome.

The story was reportedly based on the real-life Italian adventures of British Princess Margaret.

Platoon (1986)

With masterful performances and cinematography, Platoon is probably the best Vietnam war movie ever made. An absolute masterpiece. The utter chaos of war in Vietnam is brilliantly portrayed. No one can deny this film the power of its images and the weight of all-pervasive terror it creates.Oliver Stone's take on Vietnam is good. It just pales in comparison to earlier films like Apocalypse Now and the Deer Hunter. It makes you wonder why the same Vietnam theme is explored again and again and again from the same angle. This one would have been more highly considered if it were the definitive Vietnam epic.
